Before earning an income from their work, most writers spend a considerable amount of time reading and practicing. This phase is a good opportunity to read, analyse and learn from professional writers while dedicating time to developing your own writing.

EXPERIMENT

A writer's research is usually in the form of... reading!

Reading often and broadly will inform your writing practice, and help you to pick a genre that excites you and suits your interests. Analysing the work of other authors, noting their techniques, and learning from your observations will help you to develop your own unique writing style.

As with many skills, the best way to improve is to do. Practice your writing every day- try a writing exercise, a new style, a different genre or a group activity.

Exercising your creative muscles with small projects as often as possible will yield better results than starting out with a 900-page epic.

Don't forget to keep track of your learnings and your own ideas too.
