ARCHITECTURE

Works of architecture have long been considered works of art in their own right, and historically, architects were considered esteemed artists in periods such as Renaissance Italy. Architecture, which is a field that includes all stages of development from planning and design to construction, requires consideration of not only a building's physical appearance but its functionality as a space.

In the early 1st century AD, Roman architect Vitruvius described the three principles of architecture as being 'firmitas, utilitas, and venustas.' Translated- durability, utility, and beauty.

FASHION

Clothing was primarily custom-made until the mid 1800's, at which point standardised sizing and mass production gave rise to the fashion industry.

Fashion consists of several sectors, known as Textile Design and Production, Fashion Design and Manufacturing, Fashion Retailing, Marketing and Merchandising, Fashion Shows, and Media and Marketing. Each of these sectors benefit from practical creative skills.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Graphic designers are experts in communicating visually. In this work, they create and combine symbols, images, and text to express ideas and messages.

There are many subsets of graphic design, from web design to branding and logo design. All types require attention to detail, skill with digital design programs, and an artistic flair.

Graphic design is considered a career likely to have strong growth from 2020 onward, with growing demand for online resources.

JEWELLERY

The jeweller profession is many thousands of years old, and remains an esteemed craft. Jewellery is considered the making of decorative and wearable objects, often from precious metals and minerals. As with architecture, fine art, and fashion, styles in jewellery change over time.

Manual dexterity, attention to detail, good planning skills, and patience are often key skills in jewellery work.

ADVERTISING

There are many different and diverse careers involved in Advertising. Including Art Director, Account Executive, Copywriter, Graphic Designer, Visual Merchandiser, Marketing and Market Research through to Sales and Public Relations.

A fast paced and exciting career awaits if you choose to study in any of these fields. No two days will ever be the same. You will constantly be learning to keep abreast of new technologies and trends in your chosen field.

INTERIOR DESIGN

It is the job of interior designers to create interior spaces that are beautiful, safe, and functional for people. This is achieved through the selection of essential and decorative elements, from lighting, to furniture and artwork. An understanding of colour theory, furniture trends, and how people move around and use interior spaces is beneficial.

Interior designers often specialise in a particular area, such as designing workplaces or offices, designing homes, hotels, or public spaces.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Industrial design combines the science of creating a practical object that serves a purpose well with the art of designing the object to be visually appealling. Perhaps the most upmarket example of this is automotive design.

Skills in computer-assisted drawing (CAD), technical drawing, and an understanding of consumer trends and needs are useful in these kinds of roles.

TV & FILM

TV and film is an area that most of us feel we are familiar with. However, there is a large number of roles and a huge amount of labour that goes into what we see as consumers of screen media. This includes a number of roles that require a creative knack, such as camera operation, screenwriting, post-production, sound mixing, and lighting.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is the art of creating an image by capturing light with a camera by either film of digital sensor. Photographs record images that define us as people and the world around us at a moment in time.

Embarking on a career as a photographer can take you down many different roads, from food, fashion, sports, and wedding photography right through to paparazzi and forensic photography. Choose where your passion lies and watch the world open through your lens.
